3SW - Live Traffic Updates

The Intelligent Transport Systems group (ITS) is part of Hampshire County Council’s Environment Department. ITS utilise the latest technologies to enable the efficient and timely management of the transport network.

Through the collection and dissemination of credible information relating to travel conditions, users can make informed decisions before and during their journey.

With the plethora of information sources and technologies available it is now both feasible and imperative for information to be made readily accessible. Utilising the growing windows mobile PC market, mRomanse for mobile devices is one such media that allows the user to access timely, credible and accurate information as and when required for both the planning and undertaking of journeys.

Users can access mRomanse through their mobile device at  www.romanse.org.uk/mobile. and view near real time CCTV images on the road network , car park occupancy and Traffic and Travel news.

During May 08 the ITS group are also looking to trial a Traffic and Travel text messaging service. Users will be asked to complete a short questionnaire based on their car journey to and from work. This will enable personnalised Traffic and Travel information to be texted to the user prior to their journey.

The aim of the trial is to establish if a user made an informed decision about their journey based on the information they received, if the service was of value and if the user would be willing to pay.

This will help scope the development of a more automated Traffic and Travel text service not only for mobile phones but for future development incorporating satellite navigation systems.
