21CN is BT's next generation network - an advanced communications network for the future.
21CN is designed to empower the end-user with control, choice and flexibility like never before - offering communications from anywhere to any device. This ambitious and exciting programme will enable a new generation of rich personal services, transforming people's personal and business lives.
Consumers increasingly expect the ability to transfer information from one device to another without delay or confusion, moving songs from an MP3 player to a phone or a laptop, listening to digital radio or TV on demand at a time convenient to themselves rather than the broadcaster.
Many of these services, such as TV and Radio on Demand (currently showcased by the BBC, Channel 4, and ITV), are already delivered over fixed broadband lines to PCs and Laptops in the home or office. The next stage will be access to the same services on mobile phones, PDA's, MP3 players and host of other devices whilst on the move (convergence).
An end-to-end IP-based network, 21CN will consolidate BT's complex network and systems infrastructure to ensure that the delivery of the next generation of converged services is faster, more efficient and more cost-effective than ever before. But 21CN is not simply a network transformation; rather it's a radical overhaul of products, systems, process and a fundamental remaking of BT's business.
