Welcome and Introduction

The MATiSSE Smarter Working initiative (MATiSSE = Mobile And Teleworking Inititaive for a Smarter South East) commenced with a six-month measured pilot trial study in 2006. Since then, the initiative has evolved into a programme that has helped more than one thousand businesses, large and small, consider, implement or expand more productive and sustainable Smarter Working practices within their organisations.
Programme Aim: To encourage the adoption of Smarter Working practices, facilitate productive networking and the spreading of good practice within business, government as well as within the service provider community.
Smarter Working Definitions:
-Occasional (or permanent) Teleworking (e.g. home, remote and collaborative working incl smarter-working centre based)
-Flexible Working (e.g. incl. flexitime/staggered hours working)
-Smarter-Travel (e.g. incl. less peak-time and more sustainable travel (e.g. Car Share/Clubs & travel plans/audio/web & video conferencing)
-More sustainable office and home working practices (e.g. energy, waste, water)
-Effective utilisation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) including for meetings, team member communication and access to work opportunities)
2009/10 Main Programme Activities
  1. Establishment of a new Smarter Working Task Group with membership representing public, private, SME and VCO sectors; professional bodies and business groups; academia as well as stakeholders and service providers
  2. With interested parties/sponsors, further developthe HOST (Hampshire Organised Shared Travel) automated travel plan proposition with a view to implementing a feasibility and pilot study
  3. Continue with the MATiSSE workshop and Master Class events - 2009/10 programme to be announced in September. 
  4. Embed the MATiSSE initiative as an integral part of the Transport for South Hampshire ‘reduce’ strategy
  5. Smarter Working Centres – the establishment of an SWC network as part of the County-wide recession recovery initiative. SWCs allow local working, meeting and networking also providing a venue for SME mentoring/collaborative working, Business Link advice sessions and such as the Train to Gain Business Leader skills training. Pilot sites are located in Whitchurch and more recently Fordingbridge. The SWC programme will be formally launched at the eHampshire Conference in Winchester on 8th October with employer demand research scheduled for June/July
  6. Build on the foundations laid by the 2007 and 2008 Smart Commute Week campaigns to ensure the success of Smart Commute Week 2009 (2nd to 6th Nov) which will agian feature live webcasts and this year a focus on Health and well-being.
  7. Further enhance the on-line Smarter Working Cost Savings Calculator - 5000 unique visits since launch in July 2008. Reach an informed position on Smarter Working CALculator future development priorities through further research
  8. Prepare for 2011 Survey to identify the conversion rate to Smarter Working amongst leading employers and SMEs
  9. Deliver appropriate content and support for eHampshire events including the 2009 eHampshire Conference.
  10. Continue to manage and expand the MATiSSE website including the proposed Smarter Working Centre mini-site
